Comprehensive Community Infrastructure grant
OneCommunity was awarded a $44.8 million stimulus grant in August 2010 to add nearly 1,000 miles of fiber to our existing community broadband network. Part of a $70 million fiber construction initiative, the Comprehensive Community Infrastructure project will:
Create 500 jobs
Deliver high-speed affordable connectivity to an estimated 800 anchor institutions, such as schools, hospitals, government offices, public safety facilities and other nonprofits
Provide our region’s carriers, cable operators and private networks with access to the expanded network, enabling them to offer individuals and businesses a broader range of affordable broadband services – creating a platform for innovation for tomorrow’s products and services
Combine with two other fiber construction projects to create a seamless open network across the entire State of Ohio.
OneCommunity's project is one of three submitted by t
he Ohio Middle Mile Consortium (OMMC). The public-private partners of the OMMC joined forces to design a comprehensive, seamless, open and neutral network that optimizes middle mile services and coverage for the entire State of Ohio. It has been strongly endorsed by multi-jurisdictional political and civic leaders. Once completed, it will be one of the fastest, most reliable, and tightly integrated network platforms for health care, education, public safety, R&D, government and last mile carrier traffic in the country. Contributing partners Lorain County Community College, Medina County Port Authority and OARnet are providing matching funds and will receive grants for the deployment of services within their own networks.
Construction on the project is scheduled to begin at the end of 2010 and last through 2013. Read more about the Comprehensive Community Infrastructure project, and check back for updates as the project progresses.
